Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that is an inherited disease caused by an abnormal hemoglobin (an oxygen-carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to become distorted and this is known as sickled cells. These cells become fragile and are prone to rupturing. Anemia is the condition that results when the number of blood cells is significantly reduced due to the rupturing of the cells. The sickled cells can block blood vessels which can cause damage to tissue and organs which can also result in pain.
For Sickle Cell Anemia please answer the following questions:
What are the causes of Sickle Cell Anemia?
What are the symptoms of Sickle Cell Anemia?
What are treatment options for Sickle Cell Anemia?
Is Sickle Cell Anemia curable?
Is there a nationality, race or gender that this disease tends to affect more than others?
Are there any other interesting facts about this disease? (i.e. leading cause of death in women under 50, etc.)
In addition, please be sure you are answering any additional questions that anyone may be asking.
To the other groups asking questions... remember, as we discussed in class, we do not want to make these questions impossible for the group to answer. Instead we want the questions to be designed in such a way that we will learn the important facts about the diseases which we are discussing over the next few weeks.
