Hey Bio students!
Welcome to our first Blog entry for the cell disease project. This blog will be used for each group to post the responses to the questions about their disease to the class as well as answer any questions that other students in the class may ask. It will also be used to communicate questions, concerns or comments you may have on what we are discussing in class about each of the diseases or disorders.
There are only a few rules for this blog...
1. That all posts or comments are respectful of other comments, posts or questions that you are responding to.
2. That you learn something by using this site!
3. That you have some FUN!
Lets get started blogging!!
Cell Disease Project
We have been studying cells in our Biology class and now it is time for you guys to do some research on the many diseases and disorders that are out there that deal with cells. There are some links that may help you find some information on your chosen topic as well as some video links that talk about some cell diseases.
With this project each group will answer the questions about their particular disease that they have chosen to complete. The class will also be encouraged to ask additional questions about the diseases that I have not already posted for them to answer. Please note, when you are doing your research, create the links within your comments to show where you got your information from so we can avoid plagerism. If you get your information from a book, please note within your comment the book and author. Also please put the research in your own words, I do not want you to simply copy and paste as I would like for you to learn the information.
Remember, your grade is affected by your participation on other group's topics as well as your research and ability to answer questions on your topic. So make sure you're checking the blog daily and asking insightful questions.
The goal of this project will be to help us understand the diseases that can affect the human body cells. Many of you may know someone with some of these diseases, hopefully this will help us understand treatment options as well as what is actually occurring with these diseases.

Sickle Cell Anemia
Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that is an inherited disease caused by an abnormal hemoglobin (an oxygen-carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to become distorted and this is known as sickled cells. These cells become fragile and are prone to rupturing. Anemia is the condition that results when the number of blood cells is significantly reduced due to the rupturing of the cells. The sickled cells can block blood vessels which can cause damage to tissue and organs which can also result in pain.
For Sickle Cell Anemia please answer the following questions:
What are the causes of Sickle Cell Anemia?
What are the symptoms of Sickle Cell Anemia?
What are treatment options for Sickle Cell Anemia?
Is Sickle Cell Anemia curable?
Is there a nationality, race or gender that this disease tends to affect more than others?
Are there any other interesting facts about this disease? (i.e. leading cause of death in women under 50, etc.)
In addition, please be sure you are answering any additional questions that anyone may be asking.
To the other groups asking questions... remember, as we discussed in class, we do not want to make these questions impossible for the group to answer. Instead we want the questions to be designed in such a way that we will learn the important facts about the diseases which we are discussing over the next few weeks.

Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy is a heart disease where the heart muscle experiences enlargement. In other words the cells in the muscle replicate too fast or grow to large. This disease can cause heart failure or blockage of the arteries to pump blood out of the heart. There are three types of cardiomyopathy - dilated, hypertropic and restrictive, all three affect your heart muscle.
For Cardiomyopathy please answer the following questions:
What are the differences in the three types of Cardiomyopathy?
What are the causes of Cardiomyopathy?
What are the symptoms of Cardiomyopathy?
What are treatment options for Cariomyopathy? Are they different for the different types?
Is there a nationality, race or gender that this disease tends to affect more than others?

Cirrhosis of the Liver
Cirrhosis of the Liver is a disease where normal, healthy liver cells are replaced by scar tissue. This scar tissue is generally formed by alcohol consumption, but it can also be caused by chemicals, viruses and toxic metals.
For Cirrhosis of the Liver please answer the following questions:
What are the causes of Cirrhosis of the Liver?
What are the symptoms of Cirrhosis of the Liver?

Alzheimer's
Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that is a progressive disease on the nerve cells of the brain. The disease kills off the nerve cells in the brain causing memory loss and eventually problems with reasoning, verbal communication, and perception.
For Alzheimer's please answer the following questions:
What are the causes of Alzheimer's?

Leukemia
Leukemia is a type of cancer in which bone marrow, which is responsible for making white blood cells, produces the white blood cells that are abnormal. These abnormal white blood cells do not die in the timely manner that they should. Instead they stay in the blood and cause crowding in the blood. This, in turn, makes it difficult for the normal blood cells to function properly.
For Leukemia please answer the following questions:
What are the causes of Leukemia?
