Lung Cancer

Lung cancer, similarly to all cancers, is the growth of an abnormality of cells. This growth is referred to as a tumor. Tumors can be malignant or benign. A benign tumor is not considered cancer because it can usually be removed with surgery and they do not spread through the rest of the body. Malignant tumors, on the other hand, are considered cancerous because they tend to spread to other parts of the body and cannot usually be removed with surgery alone.

For lung cancer please answer the following questions:

What are the causes of lung cancer?
What are the symptoms of lung cancer?
What are treatment options for lung cancer and how does one determine the treatment path to take?
Is there a nationality, race or gender that this disease tends to affect more than others?
Are there any other interesting facts about this disease? (i.e. leading cause of death in women under 50, etc.)

In addition, please be sure you are answering any additional questions that anyone may be asking.

To the other groups asking questions... remember, as we discussed in class, we do not want to make these questions impossible for the group to answer. Instead we want the questions to be designed in such a way that we will learn the important facts about the diseases which we are discussing over the next few weeks.
